The first quarterly meeting of the Shoreline Striders Running Club was held at Kohler’s Inn On Woodlake on Tuesday evening.
Members were treated to a great presentation by ultra endurance cyclist Dave Haase.
Haase, owner of Attitude Sports, Fond du Lac, an outstanding athlete who has participated in RAAM, the Race Across America, 6 times and 5 times was the top American finisher, captivated the audience with his informative and interesting presentation.
Imagine riding your bike for 36 straight hours, then taking 2 hours off to eat a meal, clean up, get a massage and then sleep for about an hour and 40 minutes, before getting back on your bike and going another 20-22 hours and then repeating the routine daily over the next week.
In his last competition at RAAM he was the runner up, in spite of 17 hours of downtime, due to a viral infection and a stop in an Emergency Room, and being passed by numerous competitors, finishing only 4 hours behind the winner.
Sponsored by numerous companies, one IBM, who monitored his heart rate, core temperature, hydration, speed, respiration rate and distance, as well as the weather.
Monitoring the weather ahead dictated the best time to plan his breaks. If there were severe headwinds, a break would be taken to avoid this extra effort.
In most of his races at RAAM he has slept an average of 14 hours. His finish time in 2016 was the fastest non-winning time ever recorded, 8 days, 20 hours and that was with an extra 17 hours of downtime, to cover the 3,000 miles between Oceanside, CA and Annapolis, MD. He credits that on the feedback he got through IBM and the diligence of his crew.
He did not pat himself on the back, he gave credit to his team. He had a crew of 10-13 and they traveled in a car, a van and an RV, following him the entire way, supporting him in every way they could, including fixing his flat tires and those on their vehicles.
His message to the audience, was that we can do more than we think we can, but we must push ourselves past what we think we can do. He thinks he can still get a win and is planning a 2019 ride.
The next quarterly meeting of the Sheboygan County Shoreline Striders Running Club will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 6:30 PM, at a location that will be announced.
