SHEBOYGAN — As unemployment rates hover near record lows, good news for workers emerges.
According to data from QPS Employment Group, a Brookfield-Wisconsin based staffing firm, average pay rates are on the rise. “Over the past two years, we’ve seen a shift where employers need to pay more to remain competitive in attracting new employees and keeping existing workers,” according to Mark Immekus, president and chief sales officer of QPS. “In comparison to January of 2016, our current average pay rate has risen by 9.9 percent.”
The pay rate data was compiled from over 1,800 employers across the Midwest, specifically in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri. The employers’ industries range from manufacturing, food processing, distribution centers, printers, call centers, insurance agencies and other service related industries.
Employees working in manufacturing and service industries have access to see what other companies pay, and can easily apply for those positions. If companies are not offering a competitive wage, in addition to an employee-friendly environment, workers will find what they are looking for elsewhere.
January’s unemployment rate remained at 4.1 percent nationwide, which matches a 17- year low, and the report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics cited a gain of jobs in construction, food services and drinking places, healthcare and manufacturing. According to the Department of Labor manufacturing, mining and logging outperformed all other industries and created more than 250,000 jobs in 2017.
Immekus states, “This demand for workers in manufacturing has created a competitive labor market, with job seekers having their choice of opportunities. As a result, companies that are looking to attract the best talent know that they have to be ahead of their competition for hiring and the result has been increased pay rates for workers.”
QPS was founded in 1985 and has grown from a two-person operation to a company whose internal staff now numbers 350 employees in nearly 50 office locations throughout the Midwest. QPS has experienced substantial growth over the last 30 years. The company employs more than 6,800 associate employees weekly and work with over 1,800 companies.
