SHEBOYGAN — It took just one month for Democratic activist Kyle Whelton to change his mind on running for the 9th Senate District.
Whelton’s decision is a complete reversal of what he said on January 9th, which likely opens him up for criticism as he begins his campaign. “I am not running for the 9th Senate District,” said Whelton in an e-mail to MySheboygan earlier last month. “I have told numerous people that I am not planning to run for office in 2018.”
First term Republican State Senator Devin LeMahieu is gearing up for re-election this year. He will likely face the 25-year-old Democratic activist in the November election. Whelton is a member of the Sheboygan School Board.
When reached by phone Friday evening, Whelton said he decided to run after community members asked him to run against LeMahieu, saying he was making a mistake by not running for State Senate.
LeMahieu could not be reached for comment on Whelton’s candidacy.
