NEWTON — Three people were killed in a head-on crash Thursday afternoon on I-43.
At 3:36 PM on Thursday, January 25th, the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department responded to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 43 south of County Road C in the Town of Newton. The accident forced the closure of the northbound lanes of I-43 at Cleveland.
According to Inspector Jason Orth, the preliminary investigation indicates a 40-year-old male from Rural Whitelaw was driving southbound on I-43 when his pick-up truck proceeded through the median and collided with a northbound van operated by a 62-year-old Manitowoc man.
Also in the van was a 33-year-old female passenger.
All three individuals were trapped in their vehicles and had to be extricated by firefighters using Jaws of Life. The sole occupant of the pick-up truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger of the van was also pronounced dead at the scene according to the Sheriff’s Department.
Theda Star medical helicopter transported the operator of the van to Theda Clark Medical Center but had passed away as a result of his injuries.
Names of those involved were not released and the crash remains under investigation by the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The interstate was closed for approximately four hours.
