Sheboygan high school students break ground on 20th home

SHEBOYGAN — High school students broke ground Tuesday on the 20th student-built house project.

The home is being built at 5111 Green Meadow Place in the Town of Sheboygan. Project House 2017 involves the construction of a residential home by students enrolled in Career & Technical Education classes from Sheboygan North and South high schools.

The Sheboygan Area School District started the house construction program in 1998 and since then over 550 students have participated in the construction of 19 houses. To date, all 19 houses have been sold through the program with proceeds going towards scholarships, tools and equipment and the purchase of land for subsequent years’ construction sites.

According to Ted Schermetzler, this marks the sixth house to be built in the Town of Sheboygan subdivision and this home is expected to sell in the $300,000 range. Each house built affects approximately 250 jobs according to Schermetzler. Students have direct involvement with the house construction program, including construction, architecture, interior designing, and botany.
