SHEBOYGAN — While construction on Sheboygan’s Meijer store started last week, the company will look to hire at least 300 people.
In plans submitted to the City of Sheboygan, the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based retail chain will employ between 300 and 350 employees when the store is expected to open in 2019 on the site of the Memorial Mall. Construction of the Meijer store started last week with crews working to remove asbestos from the former Hobby Lobby store before the building is demolished to make room for the Meijer store.
Meijer will redevelop approximately 19 acres of the existing 31 acre Memorial Mall site located at 3347 Kohler Memorial Drive. The development will result in developing the northern half of the property and demolition on buildings is scheduled to begin by winter. Site preparation and building construction will likely start in the spring of 2018 with a 10-12 month construction timeline.
The grand opening is projected to occur in 2019.
As a part of the development, a 160,000-square-foot store will be built as well as a 3,376-square-foot gas station convenience store. A future 50,000-square-foot retail store could be built as well as a fast-food restaurant.
