SHEBOYGAN — Mayor Mike Vandersteen coasted to a re-election victory Tuesday night defeating challenger Alderman John Belanger.
Vandersteen will soon begin his second term as mayor. He first won election to the Mayor’s Office, defeating challenger Terry Van Akkeren in 2013. Both Vandersteen and Belanger announced their bids in November. Both have also been at odds on how to improve city streets and reduce costs of city services.
As of 10:30 PM Tuesday, Vandersteen leads in unofficial returns with 3,952 votes to Belanger’s 1,678 votes.
Sheboygan’s youngest candidate for Common Council has unseated a veteran alderperson. 22 year old Ryan Sorenson defeated 8th District Alderperson Joe Heidemann. Sorenson received 430 votes to Heidemann’s 120.
Political newcomer Markus Savaglio defeated Job Hou-Seye in the 5th District with 452 votes to Hou-Seye’s 135 votes. Henry Nelson received 316 votes to defeat Dean Dekker who received 253 votes in the 6th District. Andy Ross defeated Adam Cain in Sheboygan’s 4th District.
